Fay Crater, Early Day Lusk Resident, Dies in California

Fay E. Crater, 93, a pioneer of both Lusk and Casper, died last Thursday at the home of his son in Ventura, Calif., where he had made his home in recent years after retiring from active business in Casper where he had lived for the past 64 years.

Fay Crater was well known in Lusk to the old-timers. He was a half-brother to the late Mrs. Harry C. Snyder and at one time in the early 90's was associated with Mr. Snyder in the banking and mercantile business. He left Lusk about the turn of the century and went to Casper where he was associated with the Richards & Cunningham mercantile firm until the building which housed the business was destroyed by fire. He then went to California to make his home with his son.

Fay Crater was always interested in harness and gaited saddle horses and was regarded as one of the best harness horse trainers in Wyoming. Many of his horses took prizes at the Wyoming State Fair in the early days.

Mr. Crater is survived by a brother, Lee V. Crater, of Tulsa, Okla., who also resided in Lusk some 60 years ago. Another brother, Harry Crater, is buried in the Lusk cemetery. Surviving children are: W. P. Crater of Ventura, Calif.; A. V. Crater of Casper, R. K. Crater; two daughters, Mrs. V. H Donahoe of Douglas, and Mrs. John K. Kimball of Casper. Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 11, at the Horstman-Gay chapel in Casper by Rev. E. T. Rodda, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery at Casper.
