Charley Updike, Old Resident of County, Passes Away Monday, after Long Illness

WAS PROMINENT IN BUSINESS AND SOCIAL LIFE OF NIOBRARA COUNTY FOR MANY YEARS; FUNERAL IN LUSK THURSDAY

Charles Updike, well known and highly respected citizen of Niobrara county for more than twenty years, passed away at his home in Lusk, at 11 a.m., Monday, after an illness of many weeks, the immediate cause of his death being pyo-nephritis.

Mr. Updike had been a prominent figure in the life of Lusk and Niobrara county for twenty-three years, and a host of friends will mourn his passing. During his long residence here he has been engaged in the creamery business, ran a feed store, and at the time of his death was operator of the AYP filling station. He was also in the ranching business for many years.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist Church in Lusk, on Thursday afternoon at 2:30, with services in charge of Rev. Edwin Irwin of the Congregational Church, and the Peet Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Interment will be made in the Lusk Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Ira Teter, Moses Umphenour, O.P. Harnagel, John Anstice, Hugo Payne and Rulo Roberts, all old-time friends of Mr. Updike.

OBITUARY

Charles Richard Updike was born in Ponee (should be Pawnee)  Kansas, October 4, 1879, and passed away Monday morning, March 24, 1930, at his home in Lusk, at the age of 50 years, five months and 20 days.

He was married to Hattie Harriet Roberts, at Marion, Kansas, on December 19, 1900. To this union seven children were born, one passing away in infancy. The six surviving are: five sons, Henry, Richard, Lester, Bennie, and Claude. One daughter, Dorothy.

Mr. Updike was united with the First Methodist Church at Florence, Kansas, in 1900, and was transferred to the congregational Church at Lusk in 1927. He was a member of this church at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife, Hattie Updike, the five sons, Harry Updike of Lusk; Richard and Lester of Osage, Wyo., Bennie and Claude and the daughter, Dorothy, of Lusk; four brothers, Hugh E. Updike of Osage, Wyo.; Earl Updike of Balboa, Calif., Ernest Updike of Old Mexico; and one sister, Mary Smith of Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mr. and Mrs. Updike have lived in and around Lusk for the past twenty-three years, and the family have long been prominent in community and business affairs of Niobrara County.
