Gives His Life for His Country

Alfred D. Whiteside, Lusk's first patriot to give "Supreme Sacrifice."

War and its attendant sorrows were brought forcibly home to us all last Friday when the remains of Alfred D. Whiteside arrived from Fort Logan Colo., where he died May 1, 1918. In appreciation of his noble sacrifice-no less noble because he had not reached the fighting line-a large concourse of friends and neighbors of the bereaved family gathered at the depot to express their sorrow for the departed and by their presence show their sympathy for his relatives. The school children were present in a body under the leadership of Sup't Rowland, bearing the national colors and forming double lines between
which the funeral cortege passed on its way to the undertaking rooms.

Alfred D. Whiteside was born Dec. 23, 1899, in Buffalo, N.Y. and was the only son of his parents Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Whiteside.

Moving west, the family first settled in Emerson, Neb., and from there came to Wyoming in Sept., 1914, where they have since lived.

On Feb. 10, 1918, Alfred, anxious to serve his country and to emulate the example of his grandfather, J. McDonald, who served in the Civil War, enlisted as a volunteer in the regular army, being stationed at Fort Logan, near Denver Colorado.

After being in camp some time he was taken sick with scarlet fever and had nearly recovered when he was stricken down by an attack of pneumonia, to which disease he finally succumbed at the age of 18 years, 4 months and 8 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother and one sister, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Lusk Congregational Church at 2:00 in the afternoon.
