Fred Newell, pioneer rancher, dies January 27
Fred Newell, a long time resident and prominent cattleman of Sioux County died in a Scottsbluff nursing home January 27 at the age of 88.
He was born August 22, 1886, in Esterbrook, Wyo., the son of W. and Sarah Newell and in 1909 homesteaded in Sioux County where he has since resided. He married Mabel Stewart September 1911, in Mitchell.
He was a member of Nebraska Stock Growers Ass'n., The American National Cattleman's Ass'n, charter member of Sioux County Historical Society, a 60 year member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge and present holder of its Bronze Jordan Medal, and a member of Alliance Consistory of Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel, a daughter, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Oberg of Harrison, a brother Louis Newell of Torrington, three sisters, Mrs. Hobart (Edie)Perkins of of Mitchell, Mrs. Earl (Nellie) Hatch of Harrison, and Mrs. Jack (Carrie) Rohrer of Yuma, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters. Funeral service was held last Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Federated Church in Mitchell with the Revs. Carlyle Smith and Lawrence Dry officiating. Burial was Mitchel Valley Cemetery with Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 263 in charge of graveside rites.
A memorial to the Nebraska Boys Ranch at Alliance has been established.
