Surrounded by his wife of 68 years, Ardeth M. Kaan Dixon and close family friends, George Camille Dixon died to this earth, March 9, 2015 at the Niobrara Health & Life Center. He was the only child of Mable A. Dieriex & Homer A. Dixon, born in Scottsbluff, NE November 18, 1922.
Upon graduation from Scottsbluff High School, he moved to Lusk to work at the local grocery store as a meat cutter. During WWII, he entered the Navy in March of 1943 and served until 1946. He returned to Lusk and found his previous room occupied by unknown to him, his future bride, Ardeth Kaan. His work as a meat cutter at Safeway was still there.
George & Ardeth Mable Kaan married September 8, 1946. They began their married life in the apartments west of City Park. George continued working at Safeway and Ardie worked at Ben Franklin. They moved around with Safeway, eventually returning to Lusk, where George enjoyed all the athletic activities. In the early Fifties, George re-enlisted and was called to serve in the Korean War. The young couple moved to San Francisco, CA where George served as a Radio Man for 2 years.
Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to Lusk. George resumed working for Safeway and Ardie at Ben Franklin. George continued in the grocery industry working for Harry Fernau. Ardeth purchased the Ben Franklin store in 1958 and after a few years George went to work with Ardie at the Dime Store. With George's passion for sports and youth, he began officiating football, basketball and baseball in Eastern Wyoming and the Panhandle of Nebraska. He continued officiating for twenty plus years. He was a member of the Niobrara Country Club and on the Lusk Bowling League.
The couple retired and closed the Ben Franklin Store in 1995. They continued to reside here and enjoy the community and friends and support its many varied entities in the town. You would often see George driving the streets in town and attending the local sporting events.
