University of Wyoming Trustee Warren Lauer dies from cancer

LARAMIE -- University of Wyoming Trustee Warren Lauer has died from cancer. He was 62.

The university announced that Lauer died Tuesday at his home in Laramie.

Lauer had been a member of the UW Board of Trustees since 2005 when he was appointed by former Gov. Dave Freudenthal. He was reappointed to the board in 2011 by Gov. Matt Mead. He served as secretary and treasurer for the board.

UW President Dick McGinity said that Lauer's service to the university will have lasting impacts.

Lauer was a longtime Laramie attorney who received his law degree from UW in 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, and four children.

Services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Laramie.

Warren A. Lauer, 62, of Laramie, died peacefully in his home Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, surrounded by his family. Warren was born Dec. 3, 1951, to Arthur "Archie" and Rema (née White) Lauer in Lusk. Warren had one sister, Diana Jean Lauer (Larson).

Warren was a talented musician, and, as a high school senior, was selected by McDonald's All American Band to represent Wyoming by marching in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California, and Macy's Day Parade in New York City. Warren and his high school buddies created a rock band, practicing in their parents' garages, all of whom have permanent hearing loss, and played for dances around the state of Wyoming and in Nebraska. Their theme was "Dance to the Out of Sight of the Crimson Blues." Warren was the musical leader on sax and keyboard, Ron Pfister on lead and 12-string guitar, Rich Barrett on bass guitar and Rick Bafford on drums and keyboard. Every time music they played came on the radio, he broke into song and became Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stone or Eric Clapton -- he was a dynamite Jerry Lee Lewis.

Upon his 1970 graduation from Niobrara County High School in Lusk, he enrolled at the University of Wyoming as an instrumental music education major with application to alto saxophone and piano.

Warren married Jessie Boner (née Walduck) in 1971, and had two children, Shannon Bethany, born in 1973, and Dustin Arthur, born in 1975.

In 1980, Warren married the former Judy Foster and combined their families, including Judy's children by former marriage: Jodi, Lauri and Aaron.

Beginning in August 1972, Warren put his education on hold to work for the University of Wyoming photo service as assistant UW photographer and photo lab manager.

Understanding the importance of finishing his education, in 1974, Warren became a full-time student and part-time employee with UW Geology Remote Sensing Department as color photo lab manager and technician organizing, setting up and operating the department's first photographic color lab for purpose of processing enhanced color remote sensing images.

Warren completed his B.S., animal science, UW, 1976, and his J.D., UW College of Law, 1980.

From 1980-87, Warren was employed by Foster's Incorporated, serving as first vice president of a company doing business in wholesale and retail gas and diesel sales around the state of Wyoming with motel, restaurant, lounge and convention complex operations in Laramie.

In 1987, Warren opened his solo practice of law, establishing Lauer Law Office, LLC.

Warren believed in public service, donating his time and talents on many boards, including: president, Wyoming State Bar, 2005-06; member, Laramie Jubilee Days Committee, general chair, 1994; member, Albany County Bar Association; member, Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association; member, American Bar Association; life member, UW Alumni Association; member, UW College of Law Alumni Board; member, Laramie Rotary Club; member, Albany County Stock Growers Association; corporate affiliate, Cowboy Joe Club; former member, Laramie Regional Airport Board; former member, Albany County Planning and Zoning Commission, former member, city of Laramie Zoning Board of Adjustment; member, College of Law Board of Visitors; and served as a deacon, elder and trustee for the First Christian Church of Laramie.

It was Warren's great honor to serve as a trustee for the University of Wyoming. He was appointed by then-Gov. David Freudenthal in 2005 and served as secretary for the board from 2008-12 and treasurer 2007-08; Warren was reappointed by Gov. Matt Mead in 2011; term to expire in 2017. Warren and Judy made many dear and lifelong friends during his tenure on the Board of Trustees.

He and Judy became certified scuba divers and spent as much time as possible diving in the clear blue waters of Hawaii. Warren and his family were blessed to take several trips to the Hawaiian Island making many treasured memories.

Above all, Warren loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Warren was a loving and dedicated husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and most recently, great-grandfather.

Warren is survived by his wife Judy; sister Diana and her husband Larry Larson, of Gillette; daughter Shannon and her partner Renea Flores, of El Cajon, California; stepchildren Jodi Lauer and Lauri Kelly, of Laramie, and Aaron Goodwin, of Lewiston, Idaho; grandchildren Betty Jo Goodwin and her fiancé: Carlos Casas, of Cheyenne; Marshall Kelly and Sharon DeBerard, of Laramie; Erin Conley, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Mason Conley Anderson and Cara Simone Casas; nephew Michael Larson and his wife Dawn and their daughter Caitlyn, of Henderson, Nevada; niece Kara and her husband Paul Roberts and their children, Auston Larson -- freshman at UW -- Arianne, Anaiya and Ayden Roberts, of Gillette; and many dear cousins.

Warren was preceded in death by his son Dustin; parents, Archie and Rema; father-in-law Dick Foster; cousin Wayne Schmidt; and aunt Louise Schmidt.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the First Christian Church with Pastor Mike Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhill Cemetery.

The visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Warren's name to Hospice of Laramie, 1262 N. 22nd St., Unit A; Laramie, WY 82072.
