Mabel Umphenour
Funeral services for Phyllis Mabel Umphenour of Harrison will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Harrison at 10 a.m. with Reverend George Kilmer officiating. Burial will be at the Harrison Cemetery.
Mabel was born Phyllis Mabel York on August 14, 1911 to William Addison York, Jr. and Sarah "Jane" (Mattison) York in their home 7 miles west of the Town of Harrison, Neb. She was the 10th of 11 children. She grew up and lived the majority of her 101 years in Sioux County Nebraska, attending schools, first in country school and then high school at Sioux County High School where she graduated in 1930. She married Charlie N. Umphenour on August 27, 1930. To this union were born two children, Willis Charles and Pamela Renee.
Mabel lived all but a few months in and around Harrison. She was an avid bridge player, always willing to jump into a game. She was also very proud of and often very involved in her church and her community. She had been a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW in Harrison. She was also very interested in her grandchildren and great grand children's activities and was happy to see them or go watch them given the opportunity.
Mabel is survived by her daughter Pamela Haworth (Raymond) of Harrison, granddaughters Melisa Santistevan of Lusk and Rebecca Kindle of Harrison, great grandsons Noel Santistevan of Harrison, Travis Santistevan of Britton, SD and Phillip Santistevan, (Tiffany), of Torrington, WY as well as 5 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and their descendants. She is preceded in death by her husband Charlie, son Willis, both parents, siblings, Gertrude Herren (William), Clarence Charles York, Blanche Starks (Nick), Clara Mae Story (Lloyd), Roy Ottis York, William Addison York, III, Raymond Aurther York (Blanche), Otto Frank York (Bessie), Irene Jennette Dunn (Lester) and Nellie Vivian York as well as numerous nieces, and nephews.
Mabel passed from this life on March 29, 2013. She leaves behind a legacy of close family, great friends, wonderful stories and wild card games. She will be missed by her family and her community.
