Donald Lee Hoy

TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Donald Lee Hoy, 85, died Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Goshen Care Center in Torrington, Wyo.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Reverend Scott Firminhac officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

Don was born February 4, 1928 at the O.P. Harnegal home in Lusk, Wyoming with Mrs. Harnegal as the midwife. He was raised the son of James Stanley and Mary Joanna "Josie" (Pollack) Hoy. He was raised on a farm just south of the Goshen County line and attended Rawhide Buttes country school across the road from his home. Don attended High School in Lusk and stayed with the M.S. Jordan family while in school. He attended the University of Wyoming for one year and then was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas. On February 19, 1950 he married Phyllis Anna Owens at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lusk with Reverend F.C. Doctor officiating. Don worked for Mountain Bell Telephone (which later became U.S. West and Quest) starting as a lineman in Newcastle. He became an engineer and over the years he worked in Casper, Rock Springs, and Roswell, NM; but primarily in Cheyenne. While living in Cheyenne, he was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and was the Treasurer for 14 years. In 1982, he was transferred to Denver and retired there in 1985 with 38 years of service to the telephone business. The couple moved to Torrington in 1992.

Don was a member of the Home Guard during High School. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Torrington, the Telephone Pioneers, and the American Legion Travis Snow Post #5 in Torrington.

Don loved spending time with his family and he really enjoyed hugs.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis; son Randy and his wife Lynn; daughter Sandra and her husband Stephen Barnes; son-in-law Marshall Ryerson; sister-in-law Ione Turnbull; grandsons, Cori (Lorie) Hoy, Marc (Katrina) Barnes, and Levi Ryerson; granddaughters, Tracy (Jason) Craft, Jayme (Jerry) Moerdyke and Tana (Dmitri) Wood; step-grandchildren, Kylee Bell and Will (Krystle) Dendy; great grandchildren, Shyler, Ashlei and Samantha Hoy, Bethany and Kaitlyn Craft, Owen and Trevor Moerdyke and Kaylen Wood; step great grandchildren, Mason and Scarlett Bell, Brianna and Isabella Dendy; adopted great granddaughter Zoey Ann McNeace; nephew Calvin (Isabel) Hoy; nieces Carol (Ron) Spaulding and JoAnn (Tom) Downing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Gina Ryerson; sister Helen; three brothers, Edward, Raymond and Eugene; and two great grandsons, Cory and Randy Hoy.
