Services Held for Elmer J. Brown, Niobrara Pioneer

Funeral services for Elmer John Brown, pioneer Niobrara County settler, were conducted Monday afternoon from the Peet Funeral home with Rev. Wm. F. Strey of the Church of God, a neighbor friend, in charge. Pall Bearers were S. W. Boyd, Fred Sheaman, Frank Bradley, Pat Costlow, Lyle Berry and Jim Hoblit. Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Patricia Taylor, Palmer Watson, Frank Kuhn and Harriett Beck, accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson. Graveside rites were performed by members of Harmony Lodge, A.F.& A.M. Mr. Brown was a charter member of Mt. View Masonic Lodge No. 161 of Edgemont.

Mr. Brown was born March 23, 1875 at Elgin, Ill. and died February 4th at the age of 67 years.

At the age of twelve, he accompanied his parents to Crawford, Nebr. and at the age of nineteen, he came to Niobrara County where he worked for a number of years on different ranches.

Mr. Brown was married to Mary Elvira Hogg at Hot Springs, So. Dakota in 1899.

Since, Mr. Brown engaged in the ranching business near Lance Creek. When his health failed, he moved to Lusk, where he built a house at the west end of town. Here he spent the remainder of his life. His time was occupied by making wooden articles as souvenirs and tending a garden in the summer months. About three years ago Mr. Brown suffered a paralytic stroke and has not been able to get around since that time. However, in spite of this handicap he did many kind acts for friends who came to see him. At one time Mr. Brown was in comfortable circumstances, but through ill health and other reverses he lost most of his life's savings.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Elvira Brown, who has been ill at the home of her daughter in Denver and was unable to attend the funeral; four daughters Mrs. Clarence Zurcher of Belle View, Nebr., Mrs. Everett Bird of Hat Creek, Mrs. Lyle Holland of Denver and Mrs. Clark Bancroft of Cheyenne and one son John Elmer Brown of Venice, California.
