Velma M. Johnson

Velma Marie Johnson, 86, died on Oct. 8, 2011 at Torrington Community Hospital.

Colyer Funeral Home assisted the family with cremation arrangements.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Guernsey, Wyo. with Pastor Randy Simmons officiated.

Memorials may be made to the Senior Friendship Center.

Velma was born March 22, 1925, in Lusk, Wyo., the daughter of Peter and Bertha (Klempke) Owens. She was raised in Lusk and was the oldest of five children. Growing up, she had aspirations of caring for others, thus, she started training to become a nurse as soon as she was able. Her nurses training was halted when she met and married her first husband and started a family. She worked along side her husband, Wayne, by taking care of the household. Her caring for people never ceased and her hands were never idle. Velma was always busy volunteering, cooking, baking, making clothes and doing all kinds of crafts and artwork. Family history was important to her. She loved doing genealogy and going to family reunions. Velma relaxed by fishing with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Velma will be missed by all but especially by her family.

Velma was a member of the Goshen County Quilters Club and Golden Manor Social Hall.

Survivors include her daughter, Patty and her husband Bill Irving of Falls City, Oregon; her son, Owen and his wife Shirley Johnson of Chula Vista, California; her daughter, Norma and her husband Kenneth Henderson of Indianapolis, Indiana; her sister, Phylis and her husband Donald Hoy of Torrington; her brother, Robert and his wife Shirley Owens of Lusk; her sister-in-law, Gloria Johnson of Wheatland; her sister-in-law, Francis Johnson of Sheridan; five grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Wayne Johnson and two brothers.
