Harley Wilson Is Accidentally Shot and Killed Saturday

Harley G. Wilson, 40, of Lance Creek accidentally shot and killed himself with a .38 caliber Winchester rifle near Lance Creek Saturday night. Mr. Wilson, an oil field worker and part-time rancher, was found by his wife almost 11:15 p.m.

Mr. Wilson had left his home in Mosierville about 9:00 p.m. to go feed his cattle. He had a habit of carrying a rifle on the floor of the pickup and evidently had sighted something he wished to shoot and picked up the rifle by the barrel. In picking up the rifle it discharged and the bullet struck him in the head. Earl Peet, County Coroner, said death was instantaneous.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson had a custom that if Mr. Wilson didn't return in about an hour after leaving to feed the cattle, Mrs. Wilson would follow to see if there were any trouble. When she found Mr. Wilson, the pickup's light were on, the motor and heater running. Mrs. Wilson immediately returned to Lance Creek where she informed Jim Groves and Art Pollack of the scene. After investigating the men phoned authorities in Lusk from the 77 ranch.

FUNERAL TUESDAY
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. William Fredrickson, pastor of the Community Covenant Church at Lance Creek, officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Miss Margaret Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Snyder sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden" Mrs. William Fredrickson was organist.

Active pallbearers were Marshall Holifield, Clem Mosier, Dale Henton, Stewart Sides, Ted Eutsler and George Pollack. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin Skillings, Dave Kimbrough, Dave Armstrong, Jim Groves, Dean Long and George Hodgson.

Harley Glen Wilson, son of Iona and Ira Wilson, was born September 6, 1918 in Manville. He spent the first ten years of his life in Lance Creek when he moved to Wellington, Colo. with his family. There he graduated from high school in 1936.

He later returned to Lance Creek. In 1941 he married Esther Harding at Harrison. He was affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Fort Collins, Colo.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, one son, Dale Phillip, his mother, Mrs. Iona Wilson of Lance Creek; two brothers, Fred L. Wilson of Lance Creek and David M. Wilson of Frannie, Wyo.; four sisters, Mrs. Beryl Dickinson of Lance Creek; Mrs. Bertha Merna, Mrs. Wilma Merna, and Mrs. Verda Grace of Cheyenne. His father and two infant sons previously died.
