Frank Vollmer passed from this life peacefully at his home in Windsor on Sept. 4, 2010, with many family members present.
Milton Franklin Vollmer was born on June 17, 1913, in Monroe, La., to Milton Porterfield and Mabel Alice Vollmer. He spent his childhood in Lusk, Wyo. He earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Wyoming. He married Margaret Rhoads, who predeceased him after 43 years of marriage.
He is survived by two children, Edward Vollmer and Janet Vollmer-Hall, five grandchildren, Renee, Alexandra, Shannon, Carol, Gail and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Vollmer and M. Patrick Vollmer, and one sister Shirley Ahl, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is further survived in his second marriage by 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He leaves behind numerous long-time friends as well. In 1984, he married Dolores (Annie) Shaw, who survives him, along with five step-children, Dee Shaw Middleton, Grace Shaw, Loraine Shaw Pearson, John W. Shaw, and Dodie Shaw Foos, all of whom he loved as his own and who fondly called him "dad."
Frank led a long and successful career as an electrical engineer and superintendent of projects stateside and around the world, including Shasta Dam in California, Seminole Dam in Wyoming, Lake Granby Colorado, St. Mary's Lake in Estes Park, the Sirikit Dam in Thailand, and power plants and transmission lines in Managua, Nicaragua and Paraguay. Frank also worked for The Bureau of Reclamation on power plants, hydroelectric dams, electrical transmission lines, and other engineering projects around Colorado and the United States, too numerous to mention. Frank was a long-time resident of Windsor and a community leader. He was a member of the Windsor Optimist Club for 30 years and served in the offices of president and secretary/treasurer. He also served as treasurer of Cornerstone Baptist Church for nine years, and with his wife was a member of the Windsor Garden Club for 15 years.
He is remembered for his wisdom, humanity, generosity, wit, humor and his deep love of family. He will be missed and remembered by many.
