Arthur H. Beem, Resident here 40 Years, Dies Monday

Arthur H. Beem, for forty years a resident of this community, died at his home in Lusk January 10 from a heart ailment of long duration.

Services will be conducted this afternoon (Thursday) at the Peet Chapel. The Odd Fellows service will be used with the Rev. Clyde Hampton officiating. Mr. Beem had been a member of the I.O.O.F. for 20 years, since Jan. 18, 1923.

He was born at Hampton, Iowa Feb. 4, 1871, son of James K. and Mariette Beem. He came west when a young man and worked with cattle and helped to trail cattle over the old trails from the South into Montana. Later he was married to Minnie Copper at Whitney, Nebr. Nov. 12, 1895. To them were born three children, Mrs. Art HItchcock of Lusk, and Fay and Jessie who died in infancy.

In 1904 he homesteaded 50 miles north of Lusk and began ranching which he followed until April 1921 when he moved to Lusk to become the janitor of the Lusk school until 1933. He always loved children. Since 1933 he has lived in and around Lusk.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Beem, the daughter, Mrs. Arthur Hitchcock, and three granddaughters, Mrs. Ben Wolfe, Mrs. Elmer Flemming and Mrs. Joe Wolfe, four great grandchildren, one half brother and a half sister in Montana.

Death Claims A. H. Beem, Beloved Resident of City; Funeral Services Are Conducted Here This Afternoon

For over forty years a resident in this county, Arthur Henry Beem passed away at his home in this city Monday, January 10, 1944, at 5:45 p.m. Death resulted from complications attributed to advanced age. Mr. Beem had been in failing health since early fall, and at the time of his death was 72 years, 11 months, and 6 days of age.

Among his survivors are numbered his wife, Minnie; one daughter, Mrs. Art Hitchcock; one half-brother, and a half-sister, who reside in Montana; and three nieces living in Iowa, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Beem came west in early manhood, from his home and birthplace at Hampton, Iowa, and was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Copper at Whittney, Nebr., on November 12, 1895. In 1904, he and his family homesteaded 50 miles north of Lusk on Lance Creek, and resided on their ranch there until 1921, when they moved to Lusk.

With Rev. Clyde Hampton as officiate, final services for the deceased were conducted this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the chapel of the Peet mortuary. The ritualistic services of Custer Lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F. added impressively to the concluding rites. The vocal numbers, "Beautiful Isle," and "Old Rugged Cross," were sung by a mixed quartette composed of Mrs. H.J. Templeton, Mrs. C.E. Hampton, O.P. Harnagel and Palmer Watson, with organ accompaniment being contributed by Mrs. Judson P. Watson.

Interment was made in the Lusk cemetery, the casketbearers, all long-time friends of Mr. Beem being Hans Meng, Chris Ruffing, Floyd Jones, Ira Thomas, Harry Boner and Ray DeGering.
