Stephen Birch Scace
Death of S.B. Scace
Wayne (Nebr.) Herald
S. B. Scace, who lived for twenty years in Wayne, and was well known and highly respected, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Scofield, at this place last Thursday shortly after noon. Mr. Scace came to Wayne from his home at Lusk, Wyo., about the middle of November to visit relatives. Soon after he arrived he was taken sick with pneumonia, complicated by long-standing asthma, and it was apparent that a struggle was at hand to save him. But the struggle proved unavailing, all that careful nursing and doctoring could do failing to stay the march of the disease. Mrs. Scace and all members of the family excepting Mrs. Henry Petz, were at his bedside when the end came. Mrs. Petz, who was in California when the summons reached her, did not arrive until the day following her father's death.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the pastor Rev. A. S. Buell, assisted by Rev. S. X. Cross, of the Presbyterian church. Many floral tributes attested to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. A large crowd of sympathetic friends attended the services, and followed the remains to their final resting place in Greenwood cemetery.
S. B. Scace was born in New York, November 6, 1838, and therefore lived to be about 77 years of age. When still a boy he moved to Warren, Ill. In 1893 he went to Montana. At Mound Scales, Ill., in 1877, he was married. Following the big fire in Chicago, he moved to Wayne. He lived here until 1909 when he moved to Lusk, Wyo., near which place he secured a government homestead and bot other land.
Besides his wife, he is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. John Scofield, Mrs. Clarence Corbit and Homer Scace of Wayne, Mrs. James Fegley of West Point, and Mrs. Henry Petz and C. E. Scace of Lusk, Wyo. A daughter, Mrs. Ralph Hoatson, died nearly a year ago. Another daughter died in 1890.
Mr. Scace had many warm friends and his death is keenly regretted. All heartily sympathize with the sorrowing family.
