John C. Lawler of Harrison Dies Friday
John C. Lawler, 70, a long time resident of Sioux County, Nebr. died in the Community Memorial Hospital at Crawford Friday following a stroke suffered January 19. Funeral services were held Monday from the Methodist Church at Harrison. Rev. Brotzsky officiated. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery under the direction of Peet Mortuary.
Mrs. Floyd Cashatt, Miss Gayle Abel, Carroll Wallace and Mrs. W.E. Mumby sang "Abide With Me" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Mrs. Floyd Hall was organist.
Pallbearers were Roy Buckley, Raymond Larsen, Edward Dekay, T. M. Powell and J. McLary.
John Lawler was born May 11, 1879 in Lake Linden, Michigan to Elizabeth and George Lawler. His father died when he was three years old, six weeks later his oldest brother was drowned in Lake Michigan.
The family moved to Hebron, Nebr., where John grew to manhood. At the age of 14 he started farming and by the time he was 26 owned the Hebron Dairy.
He married Mabel Clair Helfer on November 23, 1904. In 1907 he and his wife and infant daughter came to Sioux County and filed on a homestead 3 miles north of Agate. He made his home in this area until he quit the ranching business in 1941. Following retirement he made his home either with or near different ones of his ten children.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Thelma Abel, Ekalaka, Mont., Mrs. Dorothy Abel, Faith, S.D., Mrs. Laurine Nunn, Fullerton, Calif., Mrs. Deryce Reed, Watford City, N.D., Mrs. Grace Parmely, Wessington, S.D., Mrs. Ramona Thomas, Crawford; four sons, Eugene and Arnold of Meeteesee, Wyo., John C. of Lusk and Albert of Portland, Ore.
