Lloyd Fernau, 14, Dies From Strange Disease After Illness of 3 Days

Lloyd Fernau, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fernau of this city, died at 6:10 Wednesday evening, after being sick since Sunday of a malady the nature of which has not been determined by the physicians.

It was at first thought he was suffering from tetanus, or lockjaw, as a result of a scratch on the arm, but some of the symptoms indicated spinal meningitis.

Dr. Ivens was called from Crawford, in consultation with Dr. G. D. Murphy of Lusk. On his way over Dr. Ivens picked up Dr. Mormens, army surgeon, who was accompanying Battery B of the Mountain Artillery to the Fair and Rodeo here.

The three physicians went into consultation immediately, but it is understood they did not agree upon the cause of the malady.

The patient was only conscious at intervals since he was stricken Sunday afternoon. Most of the time he has been in convulsions, much the same as spinal meningitis affects its victims. Still other symptoms indicated lockjaw.

Serum was sent from Casper and he responded to the treatment Tuesday, but his condition took a turn for the worse Wednesday, and he slowly sank until the end came.

Young Fernau was a general favorite among the citizens of Lusk, as well as at school, and his untimely death is a shock to the whole community.

At this time the funeral arrangements have not been made, but as the Fernau family are old residents here, burial will without doubt be made in the Lusk cemetery.

CAUSE OF DEATH OF FERNAU BOY UNDETERMINED

As yet the physicians who attended Lloyd Fernau, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fernau, who died last Wednesday, have not agreed as to the cause of death, and the death certificate has not yet been signed.

Dr. Murphy gave the cause of death as tetanus, or lockjaw; Dr. Ivens of Crawford, who was called into the case, gave the disease as a rare form of spinal meningitis. Dr. E. G. Dovey, who was called into the case shortly before death, and Dr. Mormens, the army doctor with the Mountain Artillery Battery, declare the disease to have been "encephalitis," or brain fever.

LAST RITES FOR LLOYD FERNAU HELD SATURDAY

The funeral services for Lloyd Fernau, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fernau, who died at the family home last Wednesday, were held at the Baptist Church last Saturday afternoon at 3:30.

Rev. B. F. Farrar delivered a comforting sermon to the bereaved family, and the church was filled with friends and neighbors who came to pay their respects to the manly little fellow. The casket was covered with many beautiful floral offerings.

The honorary pall bearers were Arthur Dettgen, Joe Seigert, Gerald Coen, Donald DeGroot, Kenneth Sturman and Max Meyers. The active pall bearers were Harry Olinger, Donald Peet, Howard Weyomouth, Robert Templeton, Boyd Burrowes and Clark Kuhn.

The Peet Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements, and burial was made in the Lusk cemetery.

Lloyd Frederick Fernau

Lloyd Frederick Fernau was born November 21, 1914, in Lusk, Wyoming, where he had since resided. After a brief illness of brain fever, Lloyd closed his earthly pilgrimage, and passed to the Great Beyond on August 28, 1929. Having reached the age of 14 years, 9 months and 6 days, his was a short span of life, and yet his attainments were many. At the age of two he was christened into the fellowship of the Congregational church of Lusk where he since attended Sunday School. He was a member of the eighth grade of the public schools of Lusk. He was ever a manly little fellow, cheerful and busy. To mention the qualities that characterized him, one must speak of trustworthiness, industry and manliness, qualities to be desired by any lad of his age. Though he lived but a brief span, yet he attained much and his memory will be held sacred by those that knew him.

One brother and two sisters have preceded him to the better land, John Henry, who died in infancy; Isabel Jeanette, who died at the age of five years, and Florence Henrietta, who was sixteen at the time of her death.

There remain to mourn the untimely departure of Lloyd, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Fernau, four sisters, Mrs. R. L. Lowry of Canyon City, Colo.; Mrs. Russell Watts Bonnie and Betty, all of Lusk; six brothers, George Fernau of Greybull, Wyo., Harry, Ivan, Dale Walter and Robert, all of Lusk.

Funeral services were held at the Lusk Baptist church and the remains placed at rest in the Lusk cemetery on Saturday, August 31, 1929.
