Andrew Falconer Is Called By Death At Hot Springs Hospital

A wave of grief swept over the community Monday, when it was learned that Andrew Falconer had passed away. Mr. Falconer died in Hot Springs, S. D., having been moved there recently from Edgemont, where he had received medical treatment for several months.

Mr. Falconer was a pioneer in this part of the country, a man of sterling qualities and a great friend.

Having for years owned a fine ranch at Hat Creek, and also owning and operating the Hat Creek store, he was known to almost everyone in this part of the state, and no one ever thought of driving by the Hat Creek store without stopping to see Mr. and Mrs. Falconer, for they were always sure of a hearty welcome.

The obituary of Mr. Falconer will appear in the next week's issue of The Herald.

Of the immediate family he leaves to mourn him, his wife and daughter, Mrs. Dudly Fields, to which The Herald, in joining the community, extends its sympathy.

Andrew Falconer

In the death of Andrew Falconer, which occurred in Hot Springs, S. D., Tuesday, April 18, 1922, at 5:45 a.m., Niobrara county lost a much beloved and highly honored citizen.

Andrew Falconer was the son of Andrew Falconer and Mary Escine of Scotland. He was born on the 18th day of September, 1856, at Eldin Place, Lasswade, in the county of Edinburg, Scotland, where he lived until grown to manhood, serving as apprentice and grocer.

He was married in 1876 to Catherine Storrie. To this union were born two children, John Storrie Falconer who passed away in 1889, when 13 years of age, and Mary Jane Fields of Hat Creek.

Mr. and Mrs. Falconer moved to America in 1883, coming direct to Hat Creek, Wyoming, so he is one of the pioneers of this part of the state. On the 14th of June, 1891, he was appointed postmaster of Hat Creek, having continued in this office until his demise.

He lived at Hat Creek in the days when it was a fort against the Indians, a telegraph and stage coach station. Besides being the postmaster, he conducted a general merchandise store and owned the Hat Creek ranch where he engaged extensively in the raising of high grade Hereford cattle.

Mr. Falconer was not an old man, being, at the time of his death, 65 years and five months, and up until the last year had been active looking after his business affairs.

He had been failing in health for almost a year before passing away. The body was brought home Thursday morning of last week and taken to Hat Creek, where funeral services were held that afternoon in the home that had been his for so many years. He was laid to rest in the little Hat Creek cemetery beside his son and other relatives.

Rev. D. J. Clark delivered a beautiful sermon in the memory of his friend and neighbor and the pallbearers were all men with whom Mr. Falconer had been associated many years. They were Andrew Scott, Wiley Richardson, Sam Seaman, Robert Hall, Peter Summers and E. A. Cook.

A host of friends gathered from near and far to attend the ceremony and pay their last respects to him who had crossed the great divide.

The love and esteem with which Andrew Falconer was held was manifested by the great abundance of floral offerings sent in his memory. That he will be missed and mourned by many is true, but the thought that the parting is only for a time is a comfort to those who mourn him.

"While the night of farewell is of sorrowful darkness, it must sometime, some day, somewhere give way to the day of reunion the morn of gladness."

Those nearest the deceased who are left to mourn are his wife, Catherine Falconer; his daughter, Mary Jane Fields and her little daughter, Catherine Mae, the only grandchild. Also one brother, Thomas Falconer, who resides in Edinburg, Scotland.

To these, the Herald-Standard and the host of friends join in extending most sincere sympathy.
