Mother of George Gibson, Pioneer of Hot Springs, Dies

Mrs. Anna Marie Gibson, mother of George Gibson of Lusk and a prominent pioneer of Hot Springs, S. Dak., passed away at a hospital in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Saturday evening, Dec. 30, 1950 at 7:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Gibson had been making her home with a daughter, Mrs. Charles Schwaner and family in Scottsbluff for the past few years. She was unusually alert and active in spite of her eighty years of age and was planning to come to Lusk to spend Christmas at the home of her son and family, as she has done for many years. However, she suffered a stroke about a week ago which resulted in her death.

Anna Marie Mueller was born in Loudemheim, Germany in 1870. Two of her brothers ran away from their native country and came to America, so that they would not have to serve in the German army. They prospered in the new country and when their sister was 18 years old they sent for her to come to America and she came to Hot Springs where one of them lived.

It was here that she met a young Englishman by the name of George Gibson whom she later married. They ran a store there and later owned and operated the Gibson Hotel. Mr. Gibson died in 1920 and Mrs. Gibson continued to manage the hotel in which business she had been for nearly 40 years when her children persuaded her to sell the business and retire a few years ago.

Mrs. Gibson and her brother were instrumental in getting the first Catholic Church built in Hot Springs and during the early days of the Sister's Hospital there when times were very hard, groceries from the Gibson store somehow found their way to the hospital.

The funeral mass was conducted from St. Anthony's Catholic Churchinn Hot Springs, on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1951 at ten o'clock a.m. by Father O'Hara.

Interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery and an interesting fact connected with this cemetery is that this land was given to the city of Hot Springs by Mr. and Mrs. George Gibson and was their original homestead.

The survivors are a son, George Gibson of Lusk and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Schwaner of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Mrs. Tom Gee of Worland, Wyo., and four grandchildren, Georgeann Gibson, Tommy Gee and Joann and Jack Schwaner.

All of Mrs. Gibson's children and their husband or wives and the grandchildren were present for the services.
