Bud Cantwell dies

Thomas L. "Bud" Cantwell, homesteader south of Manville and long-time Lusk resident died last Thursday. Memorial service was held here Saturday, March 24.

Cantwell was born March 23, 1888, the son of Thomas C. and Mary E. Cantwell, Socita, Neb. He came to Wyoming as a young man, working on ranches before homesteading. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I until his discharge in April of 1919.

After being discharged, he returned to his homestead and in 1937 served as deputy sheriff. He was county assessor from 1945 to 1949. He married Clara E. Gibson on August 28, 1937. She died in April of 1947.

Cantwell was an avid rock hound and liked to hunt and fish. He had been living at the Niobrara Nursing Home.

The Rev. Frank Blish conducted the funeral Saturday afternoon at Peet Mortuary Chapel. Minerva Watson, organist, accompanied Mark Lohr who sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Interment was in the Lusk cemetery. Casket bearers were Bert Gibson, Kenneth Gibson, Howard Weymouth, Harold Rogers, Ben Sturman and Frank Kuhn.

Memorials have been established to the Niobrara County Nursing Home.

He is survived by two stepsons, Bert Gibson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kenneth R. Gibson of Escondido, Calif.; a sister-in-law Sarah Cantwell of Chula Vista, Calif.; a nephew Paul Cantwell of Los Angeles; and nieces Fay Doherty of Birmingham, Mich., and Phyllis Moore Kieling of Sacramento, Calif.
