Helen Keegan Kolego

Services were held for Helen Kolego, 84, on Aug. 9 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Eugene, Oregon. She died on Aug. 4 of cancer.

She was born on Feb. 5,1923 in Washington D.C. to John and Hedwiga Schmidt Keegan. She married Statten Gooden in December 1944. He died serving his country in January 1945. They had one daughter.

She and her daughter moved to Wyoming in 1947 and she taught one year at the Dixon school in northern Niobrara County. Here, she met Francis A. Kolego. They were married on Nov. 5, 1949 in Douglas. He died March 8, 1964. Four children were born to this union. They lived on a ranch in the Shawnee community until his death. During this time, Helen was active in St. James Catholic Church and the Republican party.

She held a bachelor's degree from Trinity College and Master's degrees from McGill University and Indiana University. After her husband's death, she continued to teach, in Wyoming as well as Maryland.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen Gooden DiMuro of Cranston, RI, Ann Kolego Markovich of Austin, TX, and Mary Kolego of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, John Kolego and James Kolego, both of Eugene, OR; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Interment will be in the Douglas cemetery on Monday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. Memorials to a charity of the donors choice would be appreciated by the family.
