Fred Campbell Dies Thursday In Newcastle

Fred B. Campbell, 73, prominent northeast Niobrara County rancher, died in the Weston County Hospital in Newcastle Thursday.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Congregational Church in Edgemont with the Rev. Elmer E. Erickson officiating. Pat Colgan, soloist, sang "Home on the Range", and "I'll Come to Thee". He was accompanied by Mrs. Ben Salmon.

Pallbearers were: Jim Robinson, Bus Sedgwick, Gayle Weaver, Tom Beebe, Franklin Mahnke, and Grant Sutherland. Honorary bearers were: Ed Colgan, Billy Hanson, C.R. Cooksey, Roy Sutherland, Fred Robison, Dick Pfister, Wm. Schoonmaker, and Sam Rennard. Burial was in the Edgemont Cemetery.

Mr. Campbell was a Niobrara County Commissioner from 1934 until 1942 and it is often said that "he was the best County Commissioner Niobrara County ever had."

He is survived by his wife and three grandchildren. A son, Edward Dale, died in 1953.

Funeral services were held November 16 for Fred B. Campbell, prominent north Niobrara County rancher , at the Congregational Church in Edgemont, with the Rev. Elmer Erickson officiating.

Pat Colgan, soloist, sang "Home on the Range" and "I'll Come To Thee" accompanied by Mrs. Ben Salmon . Fred B., son of Ed and Anne Campbell, was born Oct. 16, 1886 on a farm near Chili, Ill. His mother died when Fred was two and a half, leaving three children. His father, with the aid of a housekeeper, kept the children together until Fred was five years old. At that time an aunt, Mary Baltsly, and Mr. Baltsly took Fred into their home.

In 1897, during the boom days, the family came west to Edgemont, opening a hardware business. A year later they moved to Lead, where they lived for three years. They then settled on the ranch in the Cheyenne River vicinity where Fred spent the rest of his life.

He married Miss Maude Dale in Douglas and they were the parents of one son, Edward Dale, who died in 1953.

Mr. Campbell took an active interest in the community and Niobrara County. He served as a county commissioner for eight years, the Welfare Board for 12 years and was a Republican Precinct Committeeman for many years. In each of these capacities he served with careful consideration and with fairness. He was also treasurer of the Mule Creek Fire Department but was forced to resign due to ill health.

Mr. Campbell chose woodcraft as a hobby and made many useful and attractive things for this family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Maude, three grandchildren and numerous cousins in the east.
