Mother of Local Man Passes Away Saturday Morning

Following an illness of several weeks due to a complication of diseases, Mrs. Chloe Mason Couch, aged 87 years, 6 months and 5 days, passed away at the home of her son, Samuel Couch of this city, last Saturday morning at 1:45 o'clock.

Mrs. Couch had recently come from Brunswick, Nebr., to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. Nettie Stewart and family at Keeline. She and Mrs. Stewart, shortly after her arrival in Wyoming, came to Lusk to visit at the Couch home. She was taken ill and for two weeks prior to her death, was confined to her bed.

Although not known to many of us here in Lusk, Mrs. Couch and a vast circle of warm friends, acquired during her long-time residence in Nebraska. Many of our residents who came from that state have paid her highest praise and her passing brings sorrow into the hearts of many men and women who knew her.

The body was placed in charge of George Earl Peet of the Peet Mortuary and prepared for shipment. Funeral services were held from the Samuel Couch home at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon and immediately after, the remains were sent to Brunswick, Nebr., for burial. The body was accompanied by Samuel Couch of this city and Mrs. Nettie Stewart of Keeline.

Chloe Maria Couch

Chloe Maria Mason, was born at Cheshire, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, March 21, 1844. Her ancestors came from England. She was a direct descendant of Sampson Mason, who served under Cromwell in the Parliamentary Army during the English Revolution and was also one of the signers of the Agreement establishing the town of Swansea, Massachusettes.

In her youth, Chloe (as she was familiarly called) confessed her faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and Lord and united with the Baptist church.

On November 24, 1860 she was united in marriage to Willet Couch at Lebanon Springs, New York. This man and this woman lived together almost 70 years before that "Death did them part".

Soon after their marriage, her husband and his father were both called to the colors in defense of their country during the Civil War. During their absence the farm work was carried on by Mrs. Chloe Couch her sister-in-law and mother-in-law.

To this union ten children were born, three of whom have preceded their mother. There remain to mourn her passing, her seven children; William Couch of Hastings, Michigan; Mrs. Minnie Jameson, Denver, Colo.; John Couch of Royal, Nebraska; Charles Couch, Cincinnati, Ohio; Samuel Couch, Lusk, Wyoming; Mrs. Haverland, Denver, Colorado; and Mrs. Nettie Stewart of Keeline, Wyoming; There are also 33 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, beside a host of friends. For wherever she has lived she has gathered friends about her.

The family homesteaded near Royal, Nebraska and resided there about 35 years. From there they came to Brunswick, Nebraska where they lived until Mr. Couch, who was a civil war veteran died July 29th, 1929.

Recently Mrs. Couch had come to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Nettie Stewart, of Keeline. Shortly after coming there she and her daughter came down to Lusk to visit her son Samuel Couch and it was while she was here on that visit that she answered the summons, "Come Home". She passed away Saturday morning at 1:45, thus having attained the ripe age of 87 years, 6 months and 5 days.

A long, eventful and fruitful life has thus been brought to a close. Over there loved ones were glad to welcome her home, while on earth her memory will long be cherished by loved ones that remain.

Funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Couch, at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, September 26, 1931. The remains were shipped from here immediately following services, to Brunswick, Nebr. for burial, and were accompanied by Mrs. Samuel Couch of this city and Mrs. Wm. Stewart of Keeline.
