Glen Coen, Local Man, Killed Instantly When Hit by Tourist Car Near Manville Last Night
Glen Coen 25-year-old local man was instantly killed on Highway No. 20, about one-half mile west of Manville last (Wednesday) night between 11:00 and 11:30 o'clock. Coen was struck by a passing North Dakota car as he was tightening tire lugs on the left rear wheel of his car. The young man had not realized that the approaching machine, occupied by a family from Goodrich, N.Dak., was so close, and waited too long to get out of range.
According to the testimony of the dead man's brother-in-law, Phillip Buck, who was standing beside him as he worked on the wheel, both attempted to get to the rear of their car when they first noticed the machine coming from the west. Buck was ahead of Coen, and when the machine came upon them, it struck Coen, whose body was hurled against that of Buck, the latter being knocked to the ground.
Coen's body was crashed into by the left bumper of the passing machine and thrown backward, and so great was the impact, his neck was broken and his form was stretched over the fender. An investigation of the scene of accident showed that Coen's body was carried 135 feet from where he was struck before it fell from the North Dakota car, and that an additional 100 feet was traveled before the machine was brought to a stop.
Besides his brother-in-law, Coen was accompanied by his bride of only a few months. They were on their way to Shawnee, where they have been living, and were going to get their furniture and other personal effects.
In the North Dakota car were Mr. and Mrs. George Zeeb, two sons and a daughter of the former, Leo, Albert and Violet, and a son of Mrs. Zeeb, Edwin Ebel, who was driving. Leo and Edwin had been in Lodi, Calif., and the other members of the family had gone to the coast to bring them back to Goodrich. They left Lodi at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning and had been driving almost constantly until the time of the accident. Young Ebel claimed he was driving between 35 and 40 miles per hour when he hit young Coen.
A coroner's inquest was held in the office of County Attorney Thomas O. Miller under the direction of Coroner George Earl Peet, assisted by Mr. Miller. The jury after hearing all evidence returned a verdict of accidental death. Otto Klemke, Fred Root and Dr. A. J. Stenner were the jurymen and Sheriff Will Hassed, Dr. W. E. Reckling and Quince Boan were witnesses.
Immediately following the accident, Coroner Peet was called and he took the remains in charge, and will have direction of funeral arrangements.
Services will be conducted from the Church of God in this city, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Lusk cemetery. W. G. Hardin, pastor of the Church of God at Cody, Wyoming will officiate.
Mr. Coen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie Coen; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Coen; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Shroyer and Miss Pauline, and four brothers, Gerald, Gorman, Gail and Sammy, all of whom make their home in this city.
The deceased was born at Long Pine, Nebr., on October 16, 1911, and was 25 years and 19 days of age at the time of his death. He had lived with his parents at Node and in this city for the past 19 years. He had recently been employed in a coal mine near Shawnee.
