Fannie F. Black

Services for Fannie F. Black, age 91, were held Friday, June 29, 1990, at the Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk with Rev. Allen Kallenbach officiating. Burial followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 18, 1898, in Forest City, Mo., one of the 13 children born to James and Minnie Sinclair. She received her early education in Forest City and in 1918 came to Gray Rocks, Wyo. to visit her sister, and there met William W. "Bud" Allen, whom she married in June 1919, and they moved to Fort Laramie, Wyo. where they homesteaded. They later moved to Cheyenne where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Three children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy.

They moved to Niobrara County in 1928 where Bud Allen worked in the oil field and the ranching industry. In 1942, they moved to Billings, Okla., having been transferred there by Continental Oil Company.

Bud Allen passed away in 1944 and Fannie moved back to Lusk where she worked for the Merit Cleaners. In 1946 she married Robert S. Black and they made their home in Lusk where he was a carpenter and later a custodian at the Lusk Grade School and Fannie worked as a cook at the school. Bob Black passed away in 1976 and Fannie lived in their home until 1986 when she entered the Niobrara Memorial Nursing Home due to failing health. She remained active, until very recently, often going to the Senior Center for lunch and attending church with her son and his wife.

Fannie was a member of the Congregational Church, Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge, the War Mothers, the Triple B Club, the Extension Club, and the Church Circle. She was actively involved in the fund raising for the grand piano at the high school.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen P. Thomas, Red Lodge, Mont.; one son William L. "Bud" Allen of Lusk; three grandchildren, Jo Canfield of Clark, Wyo.; Robert Allen and Kim Allen, both of Denver, Colo.; and one great-grandson, Clint Canfield.

She will be sadly missed by a host of nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

Memorials to the Niobrara Senior Center or to the Lusk Congregational Church will be appreciated by the family.
