R. Herschel Smith Dies at Crawford
R. Herschel Smith, well known in the Harrison area and a prominent Crawford businessman, died suddenly on March 29 after being stricken with a heart attack while raking his lawn. He was 58.
He was born in Crawford on April 20, 1909, and his entire life was spent in that area except for four years which were spent in Lance Creek, Wyo. He was married to Thea C. Wilson on July 30, 1930. She was from the Harrison area graduating from Sioux County High School. They had two children.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Harrison frequently to dance with members of the Country Square Dance Club, and in his younger years he worked on ranches in this area.
Funeral services were held April 2 at the Congregational Church in Crawford and interment was in the Crawford Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Thea, a son Duane of Los Alamos, N.M., and a daughter, Sue Kay of Stillwater, Okla.; and four granddaughters.
