Dan Smith, 92, dies August 3
Dan W. Smith, 92, a resident of Niobrara County for 65 years, died at the Niobrara Co. Memorial Hospital Aug. 3, after a lengthy illness. He had been cared for at his ranch home south of Manville until he entered the hospital July 7.
The Rev. Roger Bond, Lusk Episcopal Church, conducted funeral service at Peet Mortuary on Saturday. Organist was Mrs. J. P. Watson and soloist was Mark Lohr who sang "Crossing The Bar" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Casket bearers were Edward Hughes, V. J. Kennedy, J. H. Hughes, Elmer Johnson, Harvey Hughes and Orman Millikin.
Honorary bearers were Floyd Engebretsen, Doyle Blackmore, J. P. Watson, C. E. Marvin, W. A. Shaffer, Dante Testolio, Frank Kuhn, Legrand Lee, Henry Maurey, Otto Krekeler, Antone Hytrek, Harry Fernau Jr. Ira Lamb and Joe Jones.
Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the cancer fund and Niobrara Hospital fund for a recliner chair.
Mr. Smith was born September 17, 1883, in Ida County, Iowa, the son of George Smith and Frances Flint Smith. His early years were spent in Iowa. From there his parents and older brothers and sisters traveled by covered wagon to Missouri. After a few years they returned to Iowa and then to Minnesota where they located on farms near DeGraff.
He attended schools in Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota.
Mr. Smith came to Wyoming in 1911 and in 1913 homesteaded in northern Platte County near the Tom Black ranch. The Black ranch is among the older ranches in this area, having been established in 1886 by the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Black.
He and Adele Black were married July 14, 1936, at Harrison, Neb. They made their home at the Black ranch, making many improvements over the years.
He is survived by his widow; four nieces, Mrs. Roy (Mayme) Cotton, Cheyenne; Mrs. C. H. (Nora) Robinson, Greybull; Mrs. Ernest (Dora) Robinson, Council Bluffs, Ia.; and Mrs. William (Julia) Utz, Santa Cruz, Calif.; one nephew, J. W. Smith, Aztec, New Mexico; three great nieces, Mrs. Malcolm Hammer, Lusk, Mrs. Jerry Hollon, Laramie; and Mrs. Robert Roedigger, Glendo; and three great nephews, Howard Payne, Glendo; Fred Smith, Wheatland; and Clarence Payne, Sioux City, Iowa. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Minnesota, Montana, California, and British Columbia. Mr. Smith was the last surviving member of a family of ten children.
