Harriet A. Slagle
Harriet A. Slagle who homesteaded 30 miles north of Lance Creek in 1926 died Wednesday, Sept. 22, while showing her Lusk home to a potential tenant. She had been living in Newcastle, close to family members, since 1980.
Harriet Ann Slagle was born July 21, 1903, at Saint Bridget, Kan. She attended schools in Kansas and Hamburg, Iowa, where her family moved when she was 12.
She moved to Wyoming from Kansas in September 18, 1926, and homesteaded north of Lance Creek. She was cook at the gas plant in Lance Creek while proving up on her homestead. She then worked in Texas for a couple of years, then returned to Wyoming and worked in the Niobrara Hospital as cook.
She and Earl Allen Slagle, Sr., were married June 10, 1930, at the Baptist Church in Lusk. They made their home on their combined homesteads and enlarged their ranch along with their family. They moved to a ranch 22 miles south of Lusk in 1960. Mrs. Slagle moved to Lusk in 1969.
She was very active in church work wherever she lived and she helped with the American Missionary Fellowship whenever she could. She spent many years as cook at their camp. She was also very active in homemakers in Niobrara County.
She was a member of the Church of Christ, War Mothers at Lusk, and Tops 218.
Memorial service was conducted Monday, Sept. 27, at Peet Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Carl Steinle officiating. Music was provided by Edna DeCastro, organist, and Mark Lohr soloist.
Active bearers were Luther Penfield, Tom Ralls, Ben Middleton, A. D. Kruse, Don Emery and Steve Peterson. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the American Mission Fellowship.
Mrs. Slagle is survived by her three sisters, Bessie Tincher Hotz, Wymore, Neb., Emily Shelton of Douglas, Stella Kenton of Wickenburg, Ariz.; three brothers, Roy Baker of Douglas, George Baker of Riverton; and Harry Baker of Lusk; her five children Earl A. Slagle, of Newcastle, Nellie Eillen Hall of Granbury, Texas, Betty Anna Rumney of Newcastle, Johnny G. Slagle of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Earnest Slagle of Port Ludlow, Washington, her 23 grandchildren that "she was very proud of," according to the family are Jay Dee and Lou Ann Marchant; Sandra and Harriet Rumney; Terry and Nancy Rhoades; Allen, Anne, Lue, John, Sue, Nick, Sherrie, Cindy, Georgia, Connie, Brenda, David, Julie Ann, Kristin, Jenny Jo, Nanette, and Mathew Slagle. She has three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband, one son, her mother and father and three brothers preceded her in death.
