Francis A. Barrett, M. D., long time resident of Cheyenne, died September 29, 1998.
Dr. Barrett was born in Omaha, Nebraska, June 29, 1920. He was raised in Lusk, Wyoming and graduated from Lusk High School in 1938.
He received his pre-medical education at Creighton University in Omaha and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1944.
After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps he undertook five years of post-Graduate training in surgery at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Barrett was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was certified by the American Board of Surgery.
He served as President of the Wyoming Medical Society, the American Cancer Society and Wyoming Medical Services.
Dr. Barrett was chief of Staff and Surgery at both memorial and DePaul Hospitals and was Chairman of the Cancer Committee for over 40 years.
He was also a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado Medical School.
Dr. Barrett was a member of the Board of Directors of the American National Bank for 20 years.
He was a Senator from Laramie County in the 39th and 40th Sessions of the Wyoming Legislature.
He served as a Wyoming Commissioner to the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education for 33 years.
He was the Arena Physician for Frontier Days for 25 years and a member of the Heels. He was associated with the Union Pacific Railroad Hospital Association for fifty years and Chief Surgeon for Wyoming for 25 years.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank A. and Alice C. Barrett, his wife Harriett Holland Barrett, and great granddaughter McKenna Quast.
He is survived by eight children, James Hays, Michael Dennis, Francis Donoghue, Patrick Curran, Joseph Holland, all of Cheyenne, and Laurence Francis of Englewood, Colorado, Alice Catherine Clement of Parker, Colorado, and Mary Therese Garrett, of Houston, Texas.
He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a brother James E. Barrett of Cheyenne and a sister Marialyce Tobin of Casper.
Memorials to the St. Joseph Society in care of St. Mary's Cathedral or to the charity of your choice will be gratefully received. Masses will also be appreciated by the family.
Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons.
Vigil for the Deceased will be held at St. Mary's on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be at St. Mary's Saturday, October 3 at 9:30 a.m. followed by burial at Olivet Cemetery.
