Mary Minerva (Hitshew) Shippen

Mary Minerva (Hitshew) Shippen, 80, died March 3 at the Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas, following an illness of several months.

She was born January 21, 1897, at Merriman, Cherry County, Neb. the daughter of Nora Ellen Goucher and William Hatten.

She came to the Casper area at an early age. Sept. 12, 1912, she and Oliver Hitshew were married. They were the parents of four children. The family lived in the Keeline area until 1943 when they moved to Vallejo, Calif., where she worked as a welder in the Kaiser Shipyards. In 1945 they moved back to Lost Springs, her husband died in September of that year. Mrs. Hitshew worked at various jobs until 1967 when poor health forced her retirement and she made her home in Douglas. She was interested in art and spent her last years painting.

Survivors include: two brothers, Dell Hatten of Hayden Lake, Idaho, George McGregor of Long Beach, Calif., three children, Harold Hitshew of Channelview, Tex., William Oliver Hitshew of Riverton, and Mrs. Wilma Wright of Lost Springs, 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, her husband, a daughter and four grandchildren.

Funeral service was under the direction of the Stark-Lapham Funeral Home of Douglas and interment was in the Dell View Cemetery at Manville. The Rev. R. W. Nuhn of the Congregational Church of Douglas officiated.

Casket bearers were Everette Brooks, Lusk; Everette Parmely, Harrison, Neb.; William Nuttall, Lost Springs; Richard Heine; Keeline; Floyd Bartos, Keeline and Clarence Mason, Manville.
