Esther Sides Selby
Former Lusk resident Esther Ella Sides Selby died Sunday, June 2, 1985, at the Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas following a long illness. She was 73.
Mrs. Selby was born July 4, 1911, at Crawford, Neb., the daughter of Myron L. and Laura Hales Townsend. She was raised in the Whitman Community between Harrison and Crawford. She was graduated from Lusk High School in 1922.
She married Scott Sides Feb. 20, 1932 at Hot Springs, S.D. The couple resided in the Rochelle Community north of Lance Creek. After the couple's divorce, she moved to Lusk where she worked in several cafes. She then moved to Harrison where she owned and operated a cafe. She later moved to Casper and married Claude Selby there in 1961. The couple raised a granddaughter, Donna Mae, after the death of her mother, Evelyn. Mrs. Selby later returned to Lusk to care for her ill parents.
She owned and operated the Silver Cliff Hotel in Lusk. After her retirement, she was injured in a house fire and moved to Douglas to live with her daughter, Carrie Jean Prell. She resided there until her death.
She is survived by four daughters, Marie Ward of Lance Creek; Carrie Prell of Douglas; Norma Andre and Donna Murray, both of Williston, N.D.; a brother, William Townsend of Issaquah, Wash.; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; three daughters, infant Myra Lea Sides, Evelyn Sides and Bonnie Heth, and two brothers, Loren and Myron Townsend.
Funeral services were Wednesday morning, June 5, at the Converse Funeral Chapel in Douglas. Pastor Michael Hale officiated. Graveside services were at Lusk cemetery.
