Anthony Wilkinson Sedgwick
A.W. Sedgwick, Here 56 Years, Dies Saturday
Anthony Sedgwick, 82, north country rancher for the past 56 years, died at the home of his son, Francis Sedgwick, west of Newcastle Saturday.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Congregational Church in Edgemont with the Rev. Bryan Clark of Newcastle officiating. Burial was in the Edgemont Cemetery. Music was provided by the Rev. and Mrs. Howard Cummings of Newcastle.
Pallbearers were: Sam Rennard, Ed Rumney, Harold Hammer, Jim Robinson, Robert Dixon and Carl Thoeming.
Honorary pallbearers were: Bill Spencer, Norman Glasby, Mose Cooksey, Fred Robinson, Frank Robinson, Charles Nightingale, Charles Hanson, Billy Hanson, Tommy Hammel, Grant Sutherland and Jess Corneilson.
Anthony Wilkinson Sedgwick was born May 7, 1882 in Kettlewell, Yorkshire, England the son of John H. and Alice Wilkinson Sedgwick. Mr. Sedgwick came to the United States with his parents November 1, 1889. They located at Cheyenne where an uncle, Anthony Wilkinson, lived. He attended the Episcopal Church in Cheyenne, which is one of the oldest churches in the state. He was a member of the church choir.
His family later settled on a ranch near Grover, Colo. He had nine brothers and sisters. Mrs. Alice Fry, his sister, the last living member of the family, lives at Greeley, Colo. He and Pauline Dorthea Thompson were married June 29, 1904 at Greeley. She was the daughter of Henry Thompson, who ran a freight line from Cheyenne to Custer. Mrs. Sedgwick died May 28, 1920.
Mr. Sedgwick and his brother, Leonard Sedgwick bought the Wyoming ranch from Owen Shay in April 1908. He moved his family to the ranch December 31, 1908. After his brother's death in 1913 he bought remaining interest. He sold the ranch to his son, Leonard Sedgwick, in 1960. He continued his residence there until the fall of 1962. Since that time he has resided in Newcastle and at the home of his son, Francis.
Besides his two sons he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ida Knott of Riverton and Mrs. Pauline Marchant of Newcastle; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister; and many nieces and nephews.
