Homesteader D.L. Scott buried in Lusk

Funeral service was held at Peet Chapel in Lusk last Friday for David L. "Scotty" Scott, who died Tuesday at the Niobrara Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1889, in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of George and Mary Lowe Scott. He homesteaded in the Lance Creek area on March 22, 1918, and became a naturalized citizen June 23, 1920. His death leaves only a few homesteaders in the area still living.

The Rev. Chan Bayne of Manville officiated at the funeral. Mrs. Dave Leimser organist accompanied Mrs. Jack Hammond as she sang "Lord I'm Coming Home" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Casket bearers were Harry Brown, Tom Bower, Pat Miller, Clem Mosier, Larry Lowe and Elmer Nelson. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

He grew up in Scotland attending school and learning the carpentering and tinsmithing trades. He came to Wyoming in 1920 accompanied by his mother with whom he lived until her death. He worked for the Rolff family and other ranchers in the area until he homesteaded. He continued to work the homestead while herding sheep and helping others. In the early years he worked with and for Jim Klint and was a close friend of Mr. Klint and his family. They had a homestead at the same time.

Scott retired in 1954 from ranching selling his homestead to Tom and Midge Bower with whom he made his home until his death.
