Arnold "Shorty" Z. Schiefer
Arnold Schiefer dead at 72
The funeral for Arnold Z. "Shorty" Schiefer, who died after a short illness at the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital Christmas Day, was Wednesday in Newcastle.
He was born May 5, 1905 in Chicago, Ill., to Arnold and Emma Adams Schiefer Sr. The family moved to Philip, S.D. in 1906. He was married to Katherine McMillen at Kadoka, S.D., Nov. 15, 1929. Three children were born to the couple.
Schiefer drove for Johnston Fuel Liners and then for Safeway Stores, Inc., for 22 years. The family lived in Lusk from 1947 through 1955 and then moved to Newcastle. He worked for the Newcastle school system as maintenance man until his retirement. His wife, Katherine, died in April 1975 and "Shorty" then moved back to Lusk.
He is survived by his daughter Shirley Burt of Lance Creek, two sons, Clarence of Eaton, Colo., and Tom of Eagle River, Alaska; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family asks that memorials be sent to the Niobrara County Senior Citizens building fund or the fund for diabetes.
The funeral was at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Newcastle and rosary was said Tuesday evening at the McColley Funeral Home, Newcastle.
