Art Rice, 78, of Lyman, Nebr., died Friday, March 11 at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff, Nebr. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 at Bethel Baptist Church 2980 East D, Torrington, with Pastors Don Mathis and Mark Baker officiating. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials in his name may be given to the Alzheimer's Assoc. 225 N. Michigan Ave, Suite 1700, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633.

Art was born May 16, 1926 in Lusk to Lloyd and Edna (Hubbard) Rice. In 1939 the family moved to Torrington. He married Ruth Dowers in January 1946. Their first child was born during the 1949 blizzard. The family moved to Oregon. Two more children were born to the union. They lived in Pendleton and Hermiston, Ore. He later married Ramona Chaffe. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

He was a bonded livestock cattle buyer. Many hours of his life were spent sitting in a livestock auction and driving to and from those auctions. He was a professional horse shoer. Hours were spent in rodeo arenas team roping with family and friends. It was the most gratifying thing in life for him to be sitting on a horse, talking "horses and cows."

Time spent visiting him during the last few years of his life at Emerald Court and Beverly Healthcare answered the repeated question, "What's the cattle market doing?" Freckles, his faithful border collie, gave hours of unconditional love. He was a man of his word. He had a twinkle in his eye that was winsome and a deep caring for those he loved and respected.

He is survived by daughter Ronne Barton, of Hermiston, Ore., Kelly Buffington and husband, Brent from Waitsborg, Ore., Brad Rice and wife, Pauline from Oak Grove, Mo., Brother Galen Rice and wife Bonnie of Torrington, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives and one grandchild.
