Martha Pfister Pioneer Citizen Died Friday

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Huey Pfister, 82, a pioneer citizen of Niobrara County died at St. Vincent DePaul Hospital, Cheyenne, Friday following a long illness.

Rosary and scripture service was held Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. at the Peet Chapel with Father Colm Woods officiating. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Leo's Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday was celebrated by Father Thomas E. Tracey, Sheridan.

Mrs. Henry Wasserburger Sr., organist, accompanied Mrs. Jim Willson as she sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Ave Maria."

Casket bearers were Phil Brewster, Albert Ruffing, Tom Beebe, Pat Pfister, Jack Pfister, Jr., Michael McGee, James E. Pfister and Bill Huey.

Martha Huey was born March 17, 1892, at Ogden, Kan., to Margaret May Musgrove and Robert James Huey. She received her schooling in Ogden and Junction City, Kan., and the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

May 26, 1915, she married Edwin Pfister at Junction City. They moved to Wyoming in 1915 first living south of Lusk, at Pleasall and in 1916 homesteaded on Old Woman Creek north of Hat Creek in the Warren community where she was still engaged in ranching at the time of her death. They were the parents of three children. Her husband died in 1967.

Mrs. Pfister was very active in community affairs. She was the recipient of the Susan J Quealy Award in 1957 given for outstanding leadership in her community and had been a member of the Pioneer Extension Club over 25 years and was president at the time of her death. She was a 4-H leader for many years and her demonstration and 4-H members won many awards.

She taught school for approximately 30 years in Kansas and in Wyoming at Booster, Fairview, Larson-Hale, Bonsell, Jones and Cheyenne River schools.

She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, Wyoming Wool Growers Association, Niobrara Historical Society and Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her three children, Mrs. Robert (Mildred) McGee, Cheyenne, James, Lusk, and Jack of the family ranch at Hat Creek; one sister Mrs. Louise Pfister of Billings, Mont.; two brothers, Archie Huey, Lusk and Robert Huey, Ogden, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Jack and Pat Pfister of Hat Creek, James P. Pfister Jr. of Lincoln, Nebr., Kathleen and Michael McGee, Cheyenne, Naidene Williams and Juanita Smith, Lusk.

Her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers died previously.
