Services for John Peterson Sunday Afternoon; Passed away at Family Home Early Friday Morning, July 16
Services were conducted for the late John Peterson, well-known retired rancher of the Royal Valley community, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon , July 18th, from the chapel of the Peet Mortuary with Rev. Jacob Nein, pastor of the Congregational Christian Church officiating. A male quartet composed of Don Unruh, Dan Christian, Rex Yocum, and Lee Johnsonbaugh, sang "Beyond the Subset" and "The Old Rugged Cross" during the services with Mrs. J.P. Watson providing the organ accompaniment.
Burial was made in the family plot in the Lusk Cemetery with Clyde Blackmore, Gene Tyrrel, Martin Glandt, Joe Klemke, Don Keys, and P.J. Owens serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Andy Owens, Roy and Floyd McClain, A. C. "Slim" Tibbits, Roger Cowell, E. O. Kint, Walter Tyrrel, Lee Wood, Stanley Hoy, O. P. Harnagel, John Alter, Floyd Simon, Virgil Hansen, Len Joiner, Raliegh Gagstetter, Venus Kilmer, Joe Miller all of Lusk and William Intveen of Glenrock, Wyo.
John Peterson was born September 28, 1879 at Vermillion, So. Dak., a son of Nels and Mary (Black) Peterson. He passed quietly away at 3:00 o'clock Friday morning, July 16th, 1954, at the family home in Lusk, following an illness of several months. He had attained the age of 74 years, eight months, and 28 days.
His early life was spent in South Dakota where he grew to young manhood. In 1908, he moved to Cheyenne County, Nebraska where he located on a homestead 15 miles west of Dalton, Nebr.
It was in Dalton, Nebr., that he met and married Miss Pearl Mayer on December 10, 1910. Three children were born to this union, Vernon Harland, Everett DeForest, and Viola Lavona.
Mr. Peterson was a wheat farmer in Nebraska until the spring of 1929, when he moved to Royal Valley community and located on the Archie Sparks ranch nine miles south of Lusk. After the family moved to Wyoming, the younger son, Everett DeForest passed away in the Natrona County Memorial Hospital in Casper, Wyo. in 1935. Their elder son, Vernon Harland, met his death in an accident near Glendo, Wyo. in 1944, while working as a brakeman on the railroad.
Mr. and Mrs. Peterson continued farming and ranching in the Royal Valley community until 1949 when they moved to Lusk and where they have since made their home. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father and an ever willing and helpful friend.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Peterson of this city, one daughter, Mrs. John DeGroot of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren, Patricia and Dwayne Peterson of Lusk, Wyo., Wanda and David DeGroot of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Waterman, Denver, Colo., and a brother, Gus Peterson of Long Beach., Calif.

John Peterson Dies In Lusk Friday; Service Held Sun
Funeral services were held from the chapel of the Peet Mortuary in Lusk at 2:30 p.m. Sunday for John Peterson, 74, who died at his home in Lusk Friday, after an extended illness.
The Reverend Jacob Nein of the Congregational Church officiated at the services. "Beyond the Subset" and "The Old Rugged Cross" were sung by a male quartet consisting of Donley Unruh, Dan Christian, Rex Yocum, and L.E. Johnsonbaugh. Mrs. Judson P. Watson accompanied them at the organ.
Casket bearers for the services were Joe Klemke, Don Keys, Pete Owens, Martin Glandt, Clyde Blackmore and Gene Tyrrel. Honorary Pallbearers were Andy Owens, Roy McLain, Floyd McClain, A. C. Tibbits, Roger Cowell, Etra Kint, Walter Tyrrel, Stanley Hoy, O. P. Harnagel, John Alter, Floyd Simon, Bill Intween, H. L. John Peterson was the son of Nels and Mary Peterson, born September 18, 1878, at Vermillion, South Dakota, and was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He grew to manhood in South Dakota, moving to Cheyenne County, Nebraska, in 1908 and located on a homestead 15 miles west of Dalton. In 1910, he married Miss Pearl Mayer of Dalton and three children were born to them. They were Vernon Harland, Everett DeForest, and Viola LaVona.
John was a wheat farmer in Nebraska until the spring of 1929 when he moved to Wyoming and located on the Archie Sparks ranch 9 miles south of Lusk. The family moved to Lusk in 1949.
His two sons preceded him in death. In 1935, Everett DeForest died in the Casper Memorial Hospital, and in 1944, Vernon Harland was killed while working as a brakeman on the railroad in Glendo, Wyoming.
Surviving him are his wife and daughter, Mrs. John DeGroot; four grandchildren, Patty and Dwayne Peterson and Rhonda and David DeGroot; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Waterman of Denver, Coloraado; and one brother, Gus Peterson of Long Beach, California, as well as a host of friends and acquaintances.
