Pete Owens Buried Friday

The funeral for Peter Julius Owens was Friday afternoon at the Peet Mortuary in Lusk. He died at the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne after a lengthy illness.

He was born to Volgard Peter and Mary Matilda Mangels Owens near Mapleton, Iowa, Feb. 28, 1897. Pete was educated in Mapleton and came to Wyoming as a young man. He served in the army during World War I and later homesteaded northwest of Lusk.

He married Bertha Helena Klemke April 1, 1924 in Snyder, Neb. He was a mail carrier for many years, a farmer and a rancher. He also worked as a carpenter in various defense plants during and after World War II. In later years Pete managed the Royal Apartments.

Pete was a member of Wieten-Duipes Post No. 4 of the American Legion, a member of the Farm Bureau, The Chamber of Commerce and a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife Bertha, Lusk; three daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Velma) Johnson, Guernsey, Mrs. Donald (Phyllis) Hoy, Cheyenne, Mrs. William (Patty) Irving, Fall City, Ore.; one son, Robert, Lusk., two brothers, Otto of Pasadena , Calif., and Hugo Aptos, Calif. also survive, along with one sister Elsie Ketelsem, Mapleton. Nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

The Rev. Beauford Anderson presided at the funeral. The organist was Ruth Hahn and the singers were Deb Akers, Patty Leno, Kathy Doctor and Barb Hahn. Songs were "I Know My Redeemer Lives" and "The Lords Prayer."

Pallbearers were Randy Hoy, Dean Glandt, Bob Evers, Otto Klemke, Jr., Pete Owens and Terry Owens.

Burial was with military honors at the Lusk Cemetery.
