Hattie W. Thayer, 86 died Oct. 31, at the Mitchell Care Center. Her funeral was held Nov. 4 at the Harrison Methodist Church, with Babe Richardson officiating. Burial was held at the Harrison Cemetery. A prayer service for those unable to travel to Harrison was Nov. 3 at the mortuary. Hattie was born August 17, 1920 in Ardmore, S.D. the oldest of eight children to Clark E. and Bertha (Meier) Smith. She attended Ardmore schools. On July 15, 1939 she married (Millard) Alvord Thayer. To this union four children were born, Melvina, Joy Dean, Melvin and Marvin.

Hattie lived most of her life in Harrison until 1999, when she moved to Morrill. Her life was devoted to her family and to the kids of the community. She boarded and cooked for a total of 56 Sioux County high school kids, which was known as "Hattie's Hotel". She then provided day care for numerous small children. Hattie was a foster grandparent at Morrill Elementary. Hattie cooked and baked for many events as well as friends and family. She spent many hours sewing, creating quilts for family and friends. Hattie loved to garden and was well known for her beautiful flowerbeds at her home in Harrison.

She is survived by her four children and families: Melvina and Jerry Dillman of Mitchell and their children: Darci, Steve, Cassandra and Amanda Karr of Hastings, Neb.; Debra, Bruce and Burke Schneider of Mitchell, Neb.; Joy Dean and Gordon Niswender of Windsor, Colo. and their children: Kevin, Colleen, Aidan and Molly Niswender of Brentwood, Tenn.; Kory and Elena Niswender of Granbury, TX. ; Marvin and Karen Thayer of Wheatland, and their children: Kaela Thayer of Norfolk, NE and Colt Thayer of Wheatland; Melvin and Chris Thayer of Lusk and their children: John Thayer of Ft. Collins, Colo., Magan, Damian and Hadley Paulson also of Lusk. She is also survived by sisters: Darlene Lang of Thornton, Colo., Ila Russell of Henderson, Colo., and Delores Diehl of Springfield, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews that spent time with her.

Her parents, husband Alvord; and three brothers and a sister precede her in death.

A memorial has been established for the Harrison Ambulance Service.
