Effie Nortness Dies on Feb. 17
Mrs. Effie Nortness, early resident of Sioux County, died at St. Mary Hospital in Scottsbluff the morning of February 17. Funeral services were held February 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell and burial was at 12:30 in the Crawford Cemetery.
The Reverend Carlyle Smith officiated. Pallbearers were Richard Marsteller and William Grimm of Harrison, George Leeling and Dale Wasserburger of Crawford, Bob Webster of Hemingford, and Austin Casey of Gering.
She was the daughter of Adolph and Sara (Matney) Freel and born January 29, 1892, in Nebraska City. When she was a young girl her parents homesteaded north of Crawford and she received her early education in Dawes County schools.
On June 15, 1910, she married Alex Nortness at Harrison and their first home was on a homestead 18 miles northeast of Harrison. They had one son and four daughters. In 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Nortness moved to South Dakota and in 1941 to Morrill, Nebr. In September of 1968 they moved to Mitchell.
Surviving besides her husband are one son, Adolph of Mitchell; four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Nellie) Hoffman of Crawford, Mrs. George (Bertha) Leeling Sr. of Harrison, Mrs. Carl (Myrtle) James of Mitchell, and Mrs. Rollon (Effie Mae) James of Council, Idaho; one brother, Roy Freel of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; two sisters, Violet Halderman of Douglas, Wyo. and Margaret McKay of The Dalles, Ore. There are 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Her parents and three sisters, Nora Montglumery, Clara Nortness and Susie Hovet, and one brother Earl Freel died previously.
Those from other states who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Rollon James and son Dale of Council, Idaho; Merle James, Great Lakes, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Miller, Tucson, Ariz., Miss Jocie Kuhnel , Sylmar, Calif..
