Florence G. Murphy died at the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home in Crawford, Neb. May 10.
Florence was born Sept. 11, 1896 at a homestead about 18 miles southeast of Crawford. She was the oldest of six children born to George and Maude Hebbert. At age five, she learned how to make quilts to help pass time while she tended the cattle. Florence always enjoyed working outside with her dad. She attended school in a log house with homemade desks and board painted black for blackboards. She was unable to finish school and started working for other people at 12 years of age. In May 1914 she met Lee Wright; they were married Nov. 25, 1914. They went by covered wagon to their new homestead in Wyoming about seven miles northeast of Lost Springs. There were seven children born to Florence and Lee. Two daughters, Lillian and Ruey, died at infancy. Their first born Geneva, passed away in 1997. In 1929 they leased a hotel in Lost Springs and ran it until 1931 when Lee died. Florence started working for other people to support her children. From 1934 to 1944, she stayed on the homestead. In 1944 she left, returning in 1947. Florence remarried in April 1951 to August Kohrman. They lived in Gering, Neb., then later in Crawford. August died in 1963. In 1967 she married Ira Murphy. They resided in Crawford where she also took care of her mother. Ira and her mother died in 1973. Florence moved to Casper to live with her daughter, Jeannette, in 1983. In 1986 she returned to Crawford to live at the Ponderosa.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, three husbands, three children, two grandchildren, four sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law.
She is survived by one sister, Ruth McGannon; one sister-in-law, Lena Hebbert of Chadron, Neb.; four children, Jeannette Pebbles of Casper, George Wright of Greybull, Ileen Frye of Lusk and Wilbur Wright of Orin Junction; one step-daughter, Lola Mae Shaffert of Torrington; 10 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. Florence will be deeply missed by all, but she leaves us with many cherished memories.
