Service in Lusk For Lester Meade Tuesday

Lester Meade, 75, of Evansville died early Saturday morning at his home following a brief illness. The Meades will be remembered here as having operated the Rec Hall here in Lance Creek for several years.

Funeral service was held at the Peet Mortuary in Lusk at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Lee Williams of the Manville and Lance Creek churches, conducted the services. Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist and accompanied Mrs. Jack Hammond and Mrs. Gerald Hicks as they sang "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "He Touched Me." Interment was made in the Lusk Cemetery. Casket bearers were Bill Jones, Jay Nicholas, Burr Bryant, Richard Kant, Walter Kant and Fred Lund. Honorary pallbearers were Melvin Miller, Ed Cook, Dale Henton, Lue Osborn, Bill Croft, Charles V. Lee, Frank Knapp, Fred Sheman, Rollin Johnson, Ted Lohr, L. V. Stafford and Herb Lasater.

Lester Charles Meade, son of John and Hannah Meade was born Oct. 1, 1897, on a farm near Milton, Iowa, He attended near-by schools and helped with the farm until he came West in March 1920 and took up a homestead northeast of Hat Creek near the Seaman Hills. He also spent several winters with both the Len Christian and Jim Christian families working with cattle. In the late 30's he built government dikes for many ranchers in this part of the state.

He was married at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, November 19, 1939, to Mary Young Allender and they and her two children settled on the Cogeshall ranch moving to Lusk after a few years. In 1945 thy moved to the Coffee Ranch north of Harrison where Lester was foreman for several years. They lived seven years at Schuyler, Neb. and returned to Lance Creek in 1953. In 1961 they went to Evansville where Mr. Meade was employed by Stafford Well Service in the Casper office. He retired in 1970.

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Casper and the Niobrara County Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Evansville, one daughter, Mrs. Dean (Betty) Long, Linch; one son, Bill Allender, Hershey, Neb. six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Spencer, Burlington, Iowa and Mrs. Albert (Marie) Cox of Newton, Iowa; one brother, Lawrence Meade, Milton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, sister, Cora May, and brothers Harry, Leonard, and John died previously.

Memorials to the Blue Envelope Fund in Casper have been requested by the family.
