"Sherd" Hitshew, Early Resident Here, Dies Monday

Death came suddenly to William Sheridan Hitshew at his home here on Monday morning, Sept. 26, after being an invalid for the past five years.

He had arisen early but went back to bed and later his wife went into the bedroom and found him unconscious. Mrs. Hitshew then called her neighbor, Mrs. James H. Shillenn, who is a nurse and Dr. W.E. Reckling, but life was extinct when they arrived.

Mr. Hitshew would have been 85 years of age had he lived until October 6, being born in Tipton, Ia. on that date of 1864, the son of Jacob and Katie Hitshew.

He had resided in Wyoming 69 years, coming here as a youth with his parents. The family first located on Lone Tree Creek and later homesteaded on land north of Keeline.

On July 5, 1894 he was married to Miss Katie Frothman (Sothman) at Manville, Wyo. at the home of Justice of the Peace Harry Higby.

He was engaged in the ranch business until about 1910 when the family moved to Lusk and purchased a home here where they have since resided. He later engaged in the automobile business and purchased the garage building now rented by Western Repair.

Funeral services will be conducted this (Wednesday) afternoon at the Peet Chapel at 2;00 o'clock with Lawrence P. Juell officiating.

The Songs "Old Rugged Cross' and "Asleep in Jesus" will be sung by Mrs. Emerson Bonner, Mrs. Betty Fernau and Mrs. Edna DeCastro with Mrs. J.P. Watson as accompanist at the chapel organ.

Interment will be made in the Lusk Cemetery and the casket bearers will be John Alter, Delmar Alter, Nick Kaan, Allen Fosher, Archie Sparks and Harry Fernau Sr.

He is survived by his widow, Katie Hitshew; four daughters, Mrs. Ida Seigle of Ely, Nev.; Mrs. Stella Bacheller of Casper, Wyo., Mrs. Elva Costin, Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Julianna Saul of Douglas, Wyo.; and one son, John Wesley Hitshew of Antioch, Calif. Three grandchildren, Mrs. Jean Bacheller Desch of Cheyenne, Irving Bacheller of Casper and Richard Saul of Douglas, and one great-grandchild, Ann Desch of Cheyenne, Charles Hitshew of Lusk is a nephew.

Among those from out of town here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bacheller and son Irving of Casper; Mr. and Mrs Veldon Saul and son, Richard, of Douglas; Mrs Jean Desch and daughter, Ann, of Cheyenne; Mrs. Elva Costlin of Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. Sherd Hitshew Pass Fifty Years Happy Married Life

Mr. and Mrs. Sherd Hitshew observed their Golden Wedding anniversary, following 50 years of happy married life together.

Mrs. Hitshew was born in Iowa in 1877 and in 1888 moved to Wyoming with her parents. They settled in Keeline about two miles from the Hitshew ranch.

Mr. Hitshew was born in the year 1865 in Tennessee and lived there until he was 17, moving with his parents he came to Wyoming in 1882 and has made his home here since.

They were married July 5, 1894, one mile west of Manville at Harry Higby's home, with Harry Higby, the Justice of the Peace, officiating. Mrs. Higby and Mr. Perry were the witnesses. Following the wedding, the couple went to Mr. Hitshew's ranch home, which is four miles west of Keeline, where they resided for a number of years.

As the children grew old enough for school, Mrs. Hitshew would move to Manville for the school term to be with them, and then move back to the ranch in the summer.

In 1911 they moved to Lusk so as to be able to send their five children through high school, following which they sent them through the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

Three daughters and their families came to help celebrate the occasion, these being the Harold I. Bacheller family of Casper; Mrs. Elva Costin of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Juliana Saul of Douglas. Mrs. Ida Siegle of Ely, Nevada, and Petty Officer John Wesley Hitshew of San Diego, Calif, were unable to come.
