Clarence Sampson Mason

Graveside services and interment for Clarence Sampson Mason, 101, were held Jan. 7, 2004, at the Douglas Park Cemetery in Douglas, with Mark Lohr officiating.

Clarence Mason died Jan. 4, 2004, at the McComb Retirement Center in Douglas.

He was born Dec. 10, 1902, in Fort Robinson, Neb., the son of Fred D. and Carrie (Frazier) Mason. His parents were divorced at an early age, so he had no family life or home.

He went to Peetz, Colo., to live with his uncle Lester Mason, where he worked harvesting fields and repairing machinery.

In 1917, he moved to Andrew, Neb., to live with his father and step-mother Victoria.

At the beginning of World War I he was drafted onto the railroad labor force until Nov. 11, 1918.

He married Velma Wright in 1923. They were baptized in the Platte River near Orin Junction, Wyo., in 1924.

He worked for the CN&W Railroad for 35 years, working from Crawford, Neb., to Natrona, Wyo. He was a member of Lost Springs Bible Study group 1957-1994.

His first wife Velma died in 1951 and his second wife Mamie Jensen Bridge died in 1956.

He was married to Ruth Shippen on July 13, 1956, at the First Methodist Church in Casper, Wyo. They ranched from 1957-1967, raising sheep. In 1967, they sold the ranch; they moved to Manville, Wyo., in 1969, and to Douglas in 1995.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, of Douglas, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first and second wives; one son, Donald L. Mason; one daughter, Dorothy Overholt; and two sisters, Beatrice and Marjory.

Gorman Funeral Home - Converse Chapel of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.
