Garnet Lohr

Funeral services for Garnet Lohr, 84, of Lusk were Sept. 24, 1996, at the Niobrara County High School Auditorium. Her son, Mark, minister of the Lusk Church of Christ, was in charge of the service. It was mostly a musical tribute, and he was assisted by Mark Roseberry and Del Hamon who comprise the gospel trio "Friends." Memorials will be divided among some of her favorite charitable causes.

She died Saturday, Sept. 21 at Niobrara County Hospital in Lusk. She was born April 6, 1912, in Kirtley to Leonard E. and Flora Christian, in the house her grandfather had built when he became the first settler in the area.

She was educated by her mother, in rural schools in Harrison, Neb. and Lusk. She graduated from Lusk High School with the class of 1928. After attending the University of Wyoming for one year she began teaching at her home school in 1929.

She taught 40 years in Niobrara County including three years in the first position, one year at Keeline, eight years at Manville, and the remaining years at Lusk. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wyoming in 1958, but continued to take classes at various universities until her retirement in 1977.

On Feb. 27, 1942, she married Ben W. (Ted) Lohr. They had one son, Mark. During most of their marriage he ranched.

After the death of her father, Len, Ted took over operation of the family ranch. When he died Mark began running the ranch. Garnet always took an avid interest in the cattle business, and kept the ranch books right up until her death.

She had many interests in life. She loved music, and had studied voice, piano and violin - the latter being her favorite form of musical expression. She was an expert seamstress who not only made or made alteration to much of her wardrobe, but who did many beautiful pieces of needlepoint.

She was an avid reader who was seldom without a book in progress. She loved to play bridge. For more than 10 years she was responsible for the arrangement of details for a Monday night ladies bridge group meeting at the Senior Center.

She loved to memorize poetry and could do several dozen poems at any time. Numerous times, she presented programs featuring some of these.

She was a member of Chapter 1 of the P.E.O. sisterhood since 1948, a past president and state delegate. As a personal project she had assembled a slide collection of each of the local members - a project she began in the early 1950's and kept up dated until her death. When giving the slide program she gave biographical information about each person from memory.

She was also a member and past president of the local chapter of Wyoming Cattle Women.

In 1967, she and her husband were baptized and became members of the Lusk Church of Christ.

For the past twenty years she had been Sunday School Superintendent and primary teacher.

Throughout her life, she had a tremendous passion for young people. She supported various causes that benefited young people.

For the past 70 years there were very few periods where she was not teaching public school or Sunday school, and often both.

She will be remembered as someone who was a lady at all times, often taking much good natured kidding for her habit of pulling weeds while wearing a nice dress. She had a tremendous sense of humor and a particular flair for telling a story.

Survivors include her son, Mark; her sister, Catherine Shelden of Laramie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister Gladys Hagerman.

Bader Funeral Home of Lusk was in charge of arrangements.
