Charles Harold (Shorty) Andrews, 84, died Saturday, September 19, 1987 at Eventide Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. Shorty was born December 6, 1902 at Verona, NJ; he was the oldest of the seven children of Frances May (Fitcher) Andrews and Theodore Andrews.
Early in his life he picked up the nickname Shorty, as he was known as, by his many friends.
In 1912 the Andrews family moved from New Jersey and homesteaded between LaGrange and Albin, WY. Here Shorty worked with his father drilling water wells. When his family returned to New Jersey in 1914, Shorty remained in Wyoming, living with and working for the Joe Bayard family, and attending school.
Shorty moved to the Lusk area in 1926, working for the Hunter Hereford Ranch. The following year he leased some farmland south and west of Van Tassell and began farming for himself.
On March 10, 1929 he married Eve Crystalline Baldwin at Harrison, NE. They were the parents of four children. In 1932 the Andrews family moved to a farm at Hat Creek. They continued to farm and ranch in the area and later lived in the Pine Lodge Community north of Lusk.
In 1939 the family moved to Lusk to live, and Shorty started a painting and carpentry business. During the summer of 1942, Shorty and his family moved to Denville, NJ where he worked for two years in defense plants to support the war effort.
Returning to Lusk in 1944, Shorty resumed his painting business. He remained in Lusk until 1974, when he moved to Eventide Nursing Home in Sheridan due to health problems.
During his years at Eventide he enjoyed tending flowers and the grounds around the home. He took an active part in the activities for home residents. He enjoyed people and had many friends at Eventide and in Sheridan.
He is survived by his daughter Thelma Gallagher, of Billings, MT; three sons, Joe of Lusk, Melvin of Sheridan and John of Papillion, NE; one sister, Dorothy Mangus of Decherd, TN; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
There will be a memorial service Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at Eventide Chapel in Sheridan.
