Memorial services were Tuesday, June 2 for Francis Gaylord Anderson, 77, at the Peet Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Scott Grimshaw officiating.

He died May 31, 1987 at the Niobrara Memorial Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 31, 1909 to Lottie Lehmer and Andrew J. Anderson on the family ranch on Young Woman Creek in what was then Converse County.

He grew up on the open range of Campbell, Weston, and Northern Niobrara and Converse counties, helping his father raise beef cattle.

He was educated in several rural schools and was active in 4-H club work. He graduated from Lusk High School in 1927.

He worked with his father on the family cattle ranch for about 10 years after graduation. He served seven months in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Camp f-13 in Pinedale, and Camp F-132 in Sangus, CA. He was discharged from CCC Company 1344 on Jan. 31, 1934.

On Nov. 10, 1983 he married Emilia Jassmann of the Kirtley area. The couple made their lifelong home at the Anderson ranch. They had a son, Andrew John, or "Jack."

Mr. Anderson was a member of the Lusk Baptist Church, serving as a trustee and deacon for many years. He also supported the American Missionary Fellowship at the rural Sunday schools of Pioneer and Hat Creek.

Mr. Anderson was known as a friend of babies. Time was always reserved for baby ducks, newborn calves, and babies in the hospital nursery. Friends and neighbors remember hi for his friendly jokes and the twinkle in his eye.

When poor health no longer allowed Mr. Anderson to work on the ranch, he moved to the Niobrara Memorial Nursing Home. He lived there for about seven years.

Survivors include his wife, Emilia, and son Jack, both of the home; a sister-in-law, Dorthea Anderson of San Diego; two grandsons, a nephew, numerous cousins and other relatives in Iowa, Kansas, and Colorado.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, his mother and father, and an older brother, J. Stephen.

Memorials have been established to First Baptist Church or the nursing home.
