Emmett Jordan Dies in Montana

Charles Emmett Jordan, 86, of Miles City, Mont., died in a hospital there on May 1. He was well known to Sioux County as "Stem" and was a cousin to the late Bob, Dan, Dick, and Joe Jordan. His wife Mabel Hunter is a sister of Tom Hunter and the late Jack Hunter and Oressa Jordan.

The funeral was held May 5 at the Sacred Heart Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers were four grandsons, Larry LaBree, Emmett LaBree, Jordan LaBree, and Larry Ed Jordan and Dan Jordan of Harrison and Ray Lausch of Miles City.

Mr. Jordan was born in Boone, Iowa, Nov. 13, 1882, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jordan. He first came to Montana in 1902, working for various cow outfits. He was married to Mabel Hunter February 20, 1908, at Harrison, and they went to Custer County, Mont., the following summer. They traveled overland from Nebraska, their equipment consisting of a team and buckboard, two saddle horses, camping outfit and bedroll. The trip took seven days.

They homesteaded on O'Fallon Creek where they lived until 1915. That year they moved to Ismay where he operated a drayline and livery and feed barn. He began carrying star mail routes in 1917 continuing until 1944.

He also served as Deputy Sheriff and stock inspector for several years in eastern Custer County. From 1942-43 he had the mail, freight and passenger route from Miles City to Jordan. He was employed as a guard at Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge from 1949 to 1954 and was jailer and deputy in Lewistown from 1955-57.

Surviving are four sons, Larry of Roy, Mont., Mike of Spokane, David of Helena, and Charles of Kirby.; two daughters, Mrs. Sadie Burdick of Miles City and Mrs. John (Frances) LaBree of Ismay; a brother Edward, and a sister, Mrs. Celia Fitzgerald, both of Boone, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
