Elmer A. Johnson

Graveside services for Elmer A. Johnson, 96, was held at 2 p.m. on June 8 at the Prairie Rest Cemetery in Guernsey with Reverend Robert Frye officiating.

Johnson died on June 5 at the Torrington Community Hospital. Visitation hours were held at the Colyer Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1909 in Sunrise, the son of August and Christine Johnson. He grew up in the Meadowdale area where he attended a county school and later he went to school at Sunrise. He married Maurine Hughes on June 28, 1938 at Harrison Neb. She passed away in 1992.

Elmer worked at the Sunrise Mines and at an iron ore mine in Creed, Colo. He also ranched at Meadowdale for most of his life. He moved to Torrington in 1993 to live with his daughter Gwen. He enjoyed the ranch and Muskrat Canyon; and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Gwen McIntosh and her husband Fay of Torrington; two sons, Ewart "PeeWee" Johnson and his wife Doris of Meadowdale, and Lyle Johnson and his wife Trixie also of Meadowdale; five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, Art, four sisters, Hilma, Gunda, Eveline, and Mabel; one granddaughter, Tori Johnson, and one great-grandson, Wyatt McIntosh.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.
