Mathias "Mat" Fosher

Mat Fosher, Wyo. Resident since '96, Dies here Thurs.

Mathias "Mat" Fosher, 87, Wyoming pioneer and resident of Niobrara County for 44 years, died last Thursday. He and his family originally settled in the Lander valley in 1896. In fact as recently as late August he was back at Lander to attend the funeral of his only sister, Mrs. T. C. Beckwith, another Lander pioneer who was 90 years old.

Funeral services were held from the Peet Mortuary Monday at 2:00 with Richard Scott, minister of the Church of Christ officiating. Pallbearers were old friends, O. M. Rasmusen, L. C. Stoddard, C. E. Marvin, Ira Lamb, and Bob Daniels. Burial was in the Manville Cemetery. The songs of "Going Down the Valley" and "Beautiful Isle" were sung by a quartet composed of Al Davenport, Don Unruh, Mrs. Emerson Bonner, and Mrs. Ramie Fosher. Mrs. A. F. DeCastro was organist.

Mr. Fosher was born at Liberty, Ind. May 2, 1871 the son of William and Sarah Fosher. At the age of 13 he moved with his parents to McCook, Nebr. where he grew to manhood. In 1893 he was married to Mollie Witmer of McCook.

Three years later the family moved to Lander where they lived until 1914, then homesteading south of Manville. With the exception of three years spent in Nebraska this continued to be their home until 1935 when they moved to Lusk. Mrs. Fosher died in 1952. One son Charles Thomas had died in 1920.

Surviving are two sons, Harold of Lusk and Allen of Manville; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
