Betty Lorraine Shelstad Gropp
A memorial service for Betty Lorraine Shelstad Gropp, 73, was held Aug. 2, 1999, at the Congregational Church in Lusk, with the Rev. Donald Chanslor officiating.
Betty Gropp died July 28, 1999, at sunrise at her home.
She was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Cantour, Saskatchewan Canada, to Ingmar and Bertha (Olson) Shelstad, the fifth of eight children.
After graduating from high school, she went on to attend Regional Business College in Saskatchewan.
On Dec. 25, 1943, she married Flying Officer Ken Gropp of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They started a family in 1945 and migrated to the United States in 1950 to farm in Box Elder, Mont. They moved to Wyoming and Niobrara County in 1967, where they bought the Ruth Joss, Bergren, Sabin and Hitts places.
In 1990, they bought a second home in Phoenix, Ariz., where she enjoyed reading, swimming, and garage sales. She also enjoyed gardening, arranging flowers, and her special love was children
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Larry; brothers Clarence, Ivan, Norris and Gary; and sisters Marie and Phyllis.
She is survived by her husband; son Gordon; daughters, Edith Weiland and Keni Cundall, all of Lusk; sister Dory Jeffries of Canada; and grandchildren Tia Gropp of Chadron, Neb.; Shyla Cundall of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Kole Weiland, Shawnda and Kali all of Lusk.
Memorials have been established for a scholarship for graduating Lusk Seniors, and for the children's section at the Niobrara County Library.
